It’s like Raya all year round at Lemang To’ki – a little tucked away gem in the heart of Bentong town that has been serving up the traditional holiday favourite since 2006.
Nestled along Batu 2, Jalan Tras, Lemang To'ki began as a small-scale operation running only on weekends, but the allure of their delicious fare caught the attention of many locals, and a full-fledged restaurant was born three years later.
Today, they are a thriving business with 84 staff that keeps the business going during school and festival holidays. Founder Mazlan bin Ramli could not be more proud but also surprised and grateful that a simple dish has boomed
The origin of a unique name
To'ki is a blend of two words from two different Malaysian dialects. In Perak, the word for grandfather is 'atok', while in Pahang (where Bentong town is located), it's 'aki’, leading to the birth of 'To'ki'. This unique name stands as a testament to the harmonious melding of regional influences that make Malaysia's culinary scene so diverse and exciting.
A taste of Hari Raya every day
Lemang is typically associated with Hari Raya, but at Lemang To'ki, it is Hari Raya every day! Their menu features a mouth-watering array of delights:
Lemang comes in three sizes – small, medium, and large, tantalising rendang options like chicken, beef, sambal hitam with serunding as well as a grilled chicken dish served with tangy tamarind sauce that is sure to get your taste buds dancing.
A labour of love
Creating lemang is no easy task. It involves venturing into the forest to gather essential ingredients like bamboo, banana leaf, and firewood. It is this dedication to preserving traditional cooking methods that makes Lemang To'ki's offerings truly special. You can witness the fascinating process of roasting lemang from green bamboo, making the experience even more memorable.
A culinary destination like no other
The appeal of Lemang To'ki transcends borders. They've had customers from as far afield as Brunei and Japan, and from all corners of Malaysia. It's not just the diverse clientele that sets Lemang To'ki apart, though. Rumour has it that they've even had customers arriving by helicopter!
