Background

Zainurazira Zainal Abidin was appointed as Head, Legal for Touch ‘n Go on 22 May 2021 and is responsible for all legal affairs of the company. Prior to joining Touch ‘n Go, Zainurazira was with Axiata Group Berhad in charge of the legal content division of Axiata HQ and operating companies across South Asia, providing advice, structuring and negotiation of deals for investment and exploitation of content, media, broadcasting, games and applications, including the Axiata Game Hero Tournament (2019; 2020) and original content for exclusive transmission on the iflix platform including MagicHour (XL Indonesia; 2019) and Pari (Ncell Nepal; 2020). She also provided legal support in procurement transactions and mergers and acquisitions being involved in the subscription of equity in Axiata Digital Services and the Telenor ASA merger which would have been the largest telco deal in Asia.

Prior to joining Axiata, Zainurazira was briefly with Astro Malaysia where she advised commercial business units and channels on legal and strategic solutions and best practises and negotiated contracts with respect to original content production, music publishing, talent management, media sales and channel business. In particular, she supported Astro Awani and Rocket uel Entertainment on their day to day legal affairs and was involved in Astro Shaw’s big budget feature film The Garden of Evening Mists (2020) with partner HBO Asia, currently airing on HBO GO.

Before Astro, her career in-house began at Ideate Media, a premium production studio start-up co-owned by Khazanah Nasional and Astro Overseas Limited. She oversaw all legal affairs including providing end to end legal advice and structuring of deals for the development, principal photography and exploitation of feature films and scripted episodic television series negotiating against local and international SVOD, AVOD, TVOD, OTT, free-to-air, cable, digital broadcast media platforms. Zainurazira also supervised business affairs of the company including business development and strategy, capital raising, marketing, dealmaking and project green light. Her credits include the US television series DirkGently’s Holistic Detective Agency (S1 2016; S2 2017) with partners IDW Entertainment, AMC Studios, Circle of Confusion and WME-IMG, currently airing on Netflix; the regional feature film Tombiruo (2017) with partners Astro Shaw, Karangkraf Publications and FINAS, released in theatres in Oct 2017; and local premium television series Mandatori (S1 2017) with commissioning broadcaster Astro First.

Before her pivot in-house, Zainurazira was in private practise with Zaid Ibrahim & Co. (ZICO) where she advised private, public and multinational corporations on corporate, commercial and intellectual property dispute resolution and litigation. She was senior associate in the reported cases, Mediacorp News Pte Ltd & Orsv MediaBanc (JB) Sdn Bhd & Ors [2010] MLJU 310 (involving copyright, trademarks and conspiracy), and Amal Bakti Sdn Bhd & Orsv Milan Auto (M) Sdn Bhd & Ors [2009] 6 CLJ 153 (dispute relating to sale of shares). She moved to London, UK for a few years to complete her Master’s degree, and worked with US and UK law firms Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, Simmons & Simmons and Taylor Wessing in their conduct of corporate and commercial litigation, investigation and case management, including a dispute arising out of the infamous fraudulent Madoff “Ponzi” scheme. Whilst in the UK, Zainurazira took a gap year to fulfil her lifelong dream of traveling and hiking across Europe, Scandinavia, South America and on the Trans-Siberian Railway. She later returned to Malaysia, and to ZICO where she was seconded to ZICO law Bangkok as Foreign Counsel.

Zainurazira is an Advocate & Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya. She holds an LL.B (Hons) and an MBA from Cardiff University, and an LL.M (IP Laws) from King’s College London.
